History of The Mornington Peninsula

The Mornington Peninsula

A quick history about the Mornington Peninsula brought to you by the Gutter Cleaning Co. Mornington Peninsula.

Who better to tell you about the Mornington Peninsula than your local gutter cleaner.

Well here goes…

The Shire of Mornington Peninsula is a local government area in southeastern Metropolitan Melbourne. It is located to the south of the Melbourne City Centre. It has an area of 724 square kilometres and in June 2018 it had a population of 165,822.

It is believed that the first settlement was in Sorrento in 1803

Original Custodians

Where would we be without acknowledging the original custodians of this fine land that we live.

The Mayone-bulluk and Boonwurrung-Balluk clans lived on the Mornington Peninsula as part of the Boonwurrung People’s territory.

It’s believed that between 100 to 500 people lived on the Mornington Peninsula prior to European settlement.

The first European settlers lived in Sorrento. It was known as The Sullivans Bay Settlement and was established 30 years before Melbourne.

The Disappearance of Harold Holt

On December 17 1967 our Prime Minister, Harold Holt, went swimming in the Point Nepean National Park. At the time it was known as Cheviot Beach and was restricted to the public.

It was said that Prime MInister Holt plunged into the water, disappeared from view and was never seen again.

He was officially presumed dead on 19 December 1967 and his body has never been found.

Shipwrecks

There are 2 reported shipwrecks on the Mornington Peninsula.

  1. The SS Cheviot which crashed into rocks on Cheviot beach. The same beach where Harold Holt disappeared.

  1. The Wauchope which sunk off the coast of Sorrento

Enough of the doom and gloom. How about we brighten things up by looking at our beautiful parklands.

Parklands

The Mornington Peninsula is well known for its beautiful beaches and amazing restaurants and cafes but there’s one thing that makes the Peninsula so unique. And that is of course, its parklands.

  4. Moonlit Sanctuary

Tourism

When you think of the Mornington Peninsula you can’t help but think of holidays. With the beaches, parks, restaurants, wineries and so many things to do, it’s no wonder that around 100,000 people visit the Mornington Peninsula during the summer months.

There are now more than 24,000 thousand homes on the Peninsula that are used primarily as holiday homes.

One of the main attractions on the Mornington Peninsula would have to be Main Street in Mornington.

The boutique shopping and abundance of cafes and restaurants have attracted 1500 tourists who have come in on ocean liners.
