If you need to know why clean gutters are so important then this enlightening article will show you exactly why gutter cleaning should be on your to-do list…
Let’s get into it…
You see, over the year your gutters will fill up with leaves and debris…
If you don’t clean your gutters, they clog up, the rain water can’t drain away properly which causes damage to your home…
There’s so many things that can go wrong if you neglect to clean your gutters…
But before I jump in and list them out for you, let me just say…
If you live on The Mornington Peninsula and need gutter cleaning, I’m your guy…
Just saying…
Ok let’s get into it…
1. Clean Gutters Prevent Water Damage to Your Home…
This is probably the most important reason why you should clean your gutters…
Picture gutters that haven’t been cleaned in a while…
It looks something like this…
Now how do you think these gutters will cope when the next rain storm comes pounding down on this home?
They won’t cope at all…
The rain can’t travel down the down pipe so it has two options…
The first is to spill out over the edge and all over the ground…
In all honesty, this isn’t ideal but it isn’t the worst thing that can happen…
But option number two is a real doozy…
This is when the rain water floods back into your ceiling…
Believe me, you’ll know this is happening when you see something like this…
This is a house I was called out to because the rain water flooded from the gutter back into their home and destroyed their ceiling and buckled their floating floors…
They had to get a local handyman to come in and rip everything out…
Carpet…
Floating floors…
Skirting boards…
The whole kit and kaboodle…
The floors completely buckled up…
Now if this isn’t enough to convince you why you need clean your gutters, then this next thing will horrify you…
You see, this damage was only confined to the kids’ bedrooms, but this led to the worst thing of all…
They had to sleep with their parents for a week…
If that doesn’t show you why gutter cleaning is important, I don’t know what will…
And truthfully, this doesn’t happen all the time…
It’s actually more common to get small amounts of water spilling back into your home…
But in a lot of cases this can be a lot, lot worse…
2. Prevent mould from growing in your ceiling…
And not just any old mould…
But the infamous “Black Mould”…
And the thing is, you don’t know it’s happening until it’s too late…
You see, every time it rains you could have just a little bit spilling into your ceiling…
It’s dark there and damp…
That sounds like the perfect breeding ground for mould…
Eventually you might see a little stain on the ceiling like this…
But that water keeps spilling into your ceiling and feeding the mould…
And eventually you’ll end up with something like this…
The scary thing is, when you cut the ceiling out to replace this mould stained ceiling, you’ll see that it’s much worse inside your ceiling…
Dangerous Back Mould can be running rampant through your ceiling…
You could be breathing this in…
And you definitely don’t want that!
Do you see why it’s so important to clean your gutters??
I hope so…
Well, we’ve really gone down a dramatic path haven’t we?
Ok, let’s switch gears and see what can happen outside your home if you don’t clean your gutters…
3. If You Don’t Clean Your Gutters, They Can Rust Out…
You see, when gutters get clogged up with leaves and dirt, the rain has nowhere to go…
It can’t get out!!
And it may spill into your roof space, and it may not…
But one thing it will do is just stay sitting in your gutters…
And you know what happens when water just sits there in your gutters??
Yep, they rust out…
It looks something like this…
It’s just what happens when you soak metals in water for a long time…
Now I have cleaned gutters that have had water sitting in them and they haven’t rusted…
That’s possible too…
Especially if you have Colorbond gutters…
But do you know what happens to Colourbond gutters when they aren’t cleaned??
The joints where the silicone is starts to break apart…
And those rust free Colourbond gutters start to leak and drip everywhere…
So if you’re happy to have leaky and drippy gutters, by all means, don’t clean them…
But if you have dripping gutters for a long time they start to leave a green slim on the side of your home…
Yep…
Leaking gutters that are full with gunk, leave slime stains down the side of your home…
This is why you need to clean your gutters…
I know this is probably enough to convince you to clean your gutters but, you asked why and I’ve got more reasons…
You see, once water spills out from your gutters for long enough, something terrible can happen…
4. Prevent your fascia boards from rotting!
Oh my gosh, will you just go get those gutters cleaned?
Why are you still here reading??
The fate of your fascia boards depends on it…
Looky here…
This is what happens when rain water is on a constant drip from your gutters and onto your timber fascia boards…
It’s usually at the corners because they are opened on the ends…
That’s the weak point in timber…
It also happens to be the point at where your gutters are joint and sealed…
And wouldn’t you know it…
Your gutter joint is leaking because you didn’t clean your gutters…
Now you have to fix the leaking joint in your gutter and replace your fascia board…
Do you want your fascia boards to end up rotting like this??
I didn’t think so…
For the sake of your fascia boards, attend to your gutters right now…
And if that wasn’t enough, how about protecting the very foundations that your home is built on?
5. Reduce the risk of damaged foundations…
Your gutters main purpose is to collect the rain water and direct it away from your home…
There’s actually a good reason for this…
You see, if you have too much rain water pooling around your home, it can actually damage and crack your foundations…
And if you fail to clean your gutters, the water can’t get away so it spill over the edge of your gutter and it flood the ground below…
What’s below?
Your foundations!!
This will lead to cracking in your exterior and interior walls…
But that’s not all…
6. Keep Pests and rodents away from your home…
Another great reason why you should clean your gutters is to keep pests away…
If your gutters are clogged with leaves and sticks, it is actually a really great place for birds to make their nest…
I’ve even seen rats nesting in gutters too…
The birds and rats will nest in the drier months and then when it rains, you’ll have water sitting in your gutters and it will attract mosquitoes…
Do you really want birds, rats and inspects breeding and nesting in your gutters?
Didn’t think so…
Now that’s about all the reasons why you should clean your gutters…
Wait!!
Hang on a second…
I almost forgot about my people in the colder parts of the world…
You know, the places that snow in Winter??
You really need clean gutters because…
7. Your Gutters Could Freeze Over!
Think about it…
Your gutters are blocked…
The water can’t escape so your gutters just stay full of water…
Then Winter comes and the water freezes over…
Talk about destroying your gutters and putting your home at risk of flood damage…
And now you have to unblock these frozen gutters…
It’s probably much easier if you clean your gutters before Winter and before they freeze over, wouldn’t you think?
But do you want to know something amazing??
You do??
Great!
The thing is…
8. Cleaning your gutters will actually save you money
Isn’t that reason enough to clean your gutters??
You could pay a very trustworthy gutter cleaner, “Ahem” $400 dollars to clean your gutters for you and you can skip all the hassles and the expensive repair bills…
How much do you think it’ll cost you to repair the flood damage?
Think about it…
Your ceiling floods and you have to rip out plasterboard, carpets, floating floors and replace them all?
A lot more than $400 I can tell you that for sure…
And how much do you think it’ll cost to get rid of mould growing in your ceiling??
Not to mention the cost of repainting your ceiling…
More than the cost to get your gutters cleaned that’s for sure…
And there’s one more reason why you should clean your gutters…
9. Avoid Dealing with Your Insurance Company…
Yuck!!
Who wants to deal with those guys??
And… If you have any damage that occurs due to your gutters overflowing there’s a good chance that the Insurance company won’t help you…
They’ll tell you that you failed to maintain your property and you’ll have to fork out to cover the damages yourself…
Trust me…
I deal with homeowners who have flood damage all the time…
They call me in to clean their gutters after the damage has occurred and they all say the same thing…
“My Insurance company won’t cover it because we didn’t clean our gutters.”
And that’s why having clean gutters is so important…
I hope you can see how important this is??
I think I’ll leave this argument right here…
If I haven’t convinced you by now, your poor gutters will stay dirty and neglected…
They may even rust and fall apart…
I hate to think of it…
It doesn’t have to be this way…
For only $400 a year you can help save a gutter…
But not just any gutter…
YOURS!!
So now you have a decision to make…
To clean or not to clean…
I just went through the why…
Now it’s up to you…
I’m sure you’ll make the right decision…

We have water marks on around the downpipes on the top boxed Eaves. few days ago, the roofing n guttering service guy, fixed the joint of the downpipes on the top, double story, he lifted the colourbond roof sheet. Last night first rained after the roofing guy fixed it. But i had different problem, water dripping on the ground floor ceiling in the living area, how could this happened? It has never occured before.
Hi Lany, it happens all the time. You fix one thing and cause a problem somewhere else. With that said, I would call the roofing company back to take a look. They have to guarantee their work so they should come back to fix it
